Using Tags

June 30, 2026 support 3 min read

Tags are simple labels you create to organise the people in your app into groups, such as Youth, Volunteers, or a particular ministry. Once you have tagged people, you can use those tags to send targeted messages and notifications to just the right group instead of everyone.

Find the Tags screen

  1. In the left side menu, under Members, go to Tags.
  2. You will see a list of your existing tags, with a Create Tag button at the top right.

If you do not see the Members section, your app may not have member sign-in enabled.

Create a tag

  1. On the Tags screen, select Create Tag.
  2. In the Name field, type a name for your tag (for example, Youth or Volunteers).
  3. Select Save.

Your new tag is added to the list and is ready to use straight away.

  • Each tag name must be unique. If you enter a name that already exists, you will see the message “This tag already exists. Enter a different name.”
  • A tag name can be up to 255 characters long.

Edit a tag

  1. On the Tags screen, find the tag you want to change.
  2. Select the tag name, or select the edit (pencil) icon next to it.
  3. Update the Name field.
  4. Select Save.

To close without saving, select Cancel.

Delete a tag

  1. On the Tags screen, find the tag you want to remove.
  2. Select the delete icon next to it.
  3. When asked “Are you sure you want to delete this tag?”, confirm to delete.

The tag is removed from the list.

Add a tag to a person

You assign tags to people from their profile, not from the Tags screen.

  1. In the left side menu, under Members, go to People.
  2. Select the person you want to tag.
  3. Open the Tags tab.
  4. In the Add tags… box, start typing and choose a tag from the list.

The tag appears in that person’s Assigned Tags. Repeat to add more tags. To remove a tag, select the (x) on the tag and confirm with Yes, remove.

  • You can only assign tags that already exist, so create the tag first if you need a new one.

Use tags to target messages and notifications

Tags let you reach a specific group rather than your whole audience. When you compose a message or notification, you choose who it goes to by tag.

  1. Open the message or notification composer and find the To field.
  2. Add one or more tags (for example, Youth, a ministry, or Volunteers).
  3. Finish writing and send your message.

Only people who have one of the selected tags will receive the message.

Tips

  • Keep tag names clear and consistent so they are easy to pick when sending messages.
  • Set up your tags first, then tag people, then use the tags when sending messages or notifications.
